After testing the Compass Trailhawk and the Cherokee Trailhawk, this video focuses on the daddy of them all. Just outside Moab, Utah, Stephen tests out the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. As the pinnacle of the Trailhawk lineup, you’d expect the Grand Cherokee to carry some features above and beyond its smaller siblings. You’d be correct there – in addition to the red recovery hooks and Trailhawk badging, this model has two distinctive features the others don’t.

HEMI V8 Power

The first key difference lies under the hood. While you can buy the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk with a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, you can also buy it with a 5.7-liter HEMI V8. With 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque, this engine sets the Grand Cherokee well apart from its smaller cousins. In fact, the Grand Cherokee is the only current Jeep you can buy with a V8 at all. While you can’t get the 6.4-liter on offer in the SRT, the 5.7-liter engine shared with the Ram 1500 gives plenty of punch for tackling off-road trails.

Air suspension

Next, another big difference with the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk is its air suspension. Thanks to that feature, this Trailhawk can lift itself up to provide 10.8 inches of available ground clearance to the body. Now, that does not lift the Grand Cherokee’s ground clearance to the axles, but it does provide better approach and departure angles than the Renegade, Compass and Cherokee. With the air suspension fully lifted and air dam off, the best possible approach angle with the Grand Cherokee is 36.1 degrees. Couple that to a 27.1 degree departure angle and 9.7 inches of ground clearance to the axles, and you have a pretty capable off-roader by the numbers.

One down side to the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk is its breakover angle. Since it is larger than the Cherokee, its breakover is just a bit worse, at 22.8 degrees. Also unlike the Cherokee, it does not have a full locking rear differential. Instead, the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk uses an electronic limited-slip differential.

Nevertheless, you still get a capable machine and a fair bit more luxury than the other Trailhawk models. There is a price to pay though, as the Grand Cherokee kicks off at $44,045. Slot a HEMI V8 under the hood and add some options, and you’re easily looking to spend more than $50,000. Is it worth the money, and is it the best Trailhawk model?
