The running of the 2020 Dakar Rally is all wrapped up and Americans were well represented this year, taking the title in two categories for the first time ever.
The overall winner in the car category was Carlos Sainz in his X-Raid Mini, claiming his third overall win at the Dakar Rally.
“I feel very happy,” said Sainz. “There’s a lot of effort behind this. A lot of training, practice, physically, with the team… We started winning this Dakar on day one and we have gone flat out from the beginning.”
In the motorcycle category, American Ricky Brabec took the overall win on his Monster Energy Honda, putting an end to 18 straight years of KTM winning the race. In side-by-sides, Casey Currie took the win in his Can-Am Maverick X3 by a whopping 39 minutes.
“Two Americans on top! I’m blown away, man! Sean and my team did a phenomenal job. The car ran great all the time,” said Currie. “It’s just an epic experience, and I’ll never forget it, for sure. This is my most emotional win ever. The amount of pressure that was on me was incredible. I love this rally! We’re coming back next year to defend our title. I’m very stoked for Ricky Brabec, he deserves it more than I do.”
In the ATV category, Chile’s Ignacio Casale marked his return to the race by taking the win, while the big trucks continue to be dominated by Kamaz, with Andrey Karginov taking the win.
